The Message Matrix Worksheet

Use this document to evaluate your messaging. Here is how it works:

First, download and open or print the document

Consider the message you need to send

  • Who is the audience? Make a note. Is there more than one audience? Consider whether this needs to be a single message or multiple messages to improve clarity and engagement
  • With the audience defined, what is the intention? Is it to connect or grab attention? Is it to engage or begin a relationship? Is it to educate or demonstrate credibility? As with audience, if you think you have multiple intentions, consider producing several variations aimed at each one to increase effectiveness.
  • Finally, what is the urgency? Does it need immediate action? Is it aimed at those who are not ready to act but want to learn more? is it designed as a passive ‘stay in touch’ piece? Use the urgency to define tone and separate into separate messages if necessay to communicate several levels of urgency.

Now that you have the message type defined, note on the matrix where it should be located. What areas need more attention? Are you sending too many of the same messages?
